If you've been reading about lymphatic drainage massage and wondering whether it's for you, here's a plain guide to what it is and what a session at Vibrant Living is like.
What is lymphatic drainage massage?
It's a gentle, rhythmic massage that works with the body's lymphatic system. The strokes are much lighter than a deep tissue or sports massage. Instead of working into muscle, the therapist uses slow, flowing movements over the skin.
How does it feel?
Soft and calming. Many people find it one of the most relaxing treatments they've had, because the light, repetitive rhythm helps the body settle. If you're used to firm pressure, it can feel surprisingly gentle, and that's by design.
Who tends to book it?
- People arriving in Hanmer after a long drive or flight who want to feel lighter and less puffy
- Anyone who prefers a gentle massage to deep pressure
- Guests on a retreat or wellness weekend looking for a restorative treatment
Potential benefits of lymphatic drainage massage
- Less fluid retention and swelling: can help reduce swelling, particularly when it's caused by lymphatic or post-operative fluid build-up.
- Supports lymph flow: gentle, rhythmic movements encourage lymph fluid towards working lymph nodes and vessels.
- Less puffiness: especially around the face and eyes, and other areas prone to temporary fluid retention.
- Support after some surgeries: manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is often part of care for certain types of post-operative swelling, always following your surgeon's or physio's advice.
- Deep relaxation: the slow, repetitive strokes can help calm the nervous system.
- A lighter feeling: many people feel lighter and less "puffy" afterwards when there's excess fluid in the tissues.
- Lymphoedema support: can support some forms of lymphoedema management, usually alongside compression, exercise and skin care.
- Comfort and mobility: may ease tightness or heaviness caused by swelling.
If you have a medical condition, are recovering from surgery or are unsure whether it suits you, check with your doctor first and let us know when you book.
