A Wellness Weekend in Hanmer Springs: The Complete Itinerary

By Adela, Co-owner & Spa Director  ·  August 2026  ·  8 min read

Most weekend guides to Hanmer Springs read like a checklist of activities to squeeze in. That is fine if you are chasing adventure, but it is the opposite of what a wellness weekend should feel like. The whole point of a wellness break is to do less, not more, and to come home genuinely rested rather than needing a holiday to recover from your holiday.

This itinerary takes a different approach. It is built around slowing down, with just enough structure to make the most of the weekend and plenty of space left deliberately empty. We have written it from the perspective of a retreat and day spa in the village, so we know where the calm is to be found. Adjust the timings to suit your own pace, because the best wellness weekends are the ones you do not rush.

Before you go: set the tone

A wellness weekend starts before you arrive. Hanmer Springs sits around 133 kilometres north of Christchurch, roughly one hour forty-five minutes to two hours by car via State Highway 7, and the drive itself is part of the wind down as the plains give way to alpine country. Leave a little later than you think you need to, so you are not rushing, and resist the urge to over-plan. One or two anchor points a day is plenty.

Pack for warmth in layers, whatever the season, because the village is alpine and the evenings cool quickly. Bring a book you have been meaning to read. And decide in advance that this is a weekend for putting the phone down.

Friday evening: arrive and decompress

Aim to arrive in the late afternoon. Check in, unpack slowly, and resist the temptation to head straight back out. If you are staying with us, this is the moment to appreciate having your own quiet base, whether that is the private infrared sauna in the Lodge Ensuite or the outdoor hot tub at the Alpine Spa Villa. Our check-in is from 3pm, which gives you time to settle before the evening.

For dinner, keep it easy. The village has a good spread of relaxed places to eat, so there is no need to travel far or dress up. A warm meal, an early night, and a proper sleep will set the whole weekend up. The goal for Friday is simply to arrive in every sense, not just physically but mentally.

Saturday morning: gentle movement

Start slowly with a good breakfast. If you are staying with us, our two course organic breakfast at NZ$40 per person uses produce from our own gardens and eggs from our own chickens where possible, which is a lovely, unhurried way to begin.

Once you are fed, ease into some gentle movement while your body is fresh. The Conical Hill Walkway is a well loved local walk that climbs through forest to a lookout over the village and the mountains, and it is manageable for most fitness levels at a relaxed pace. If you would prefer something flatter, the trails through Hanmer Forest Park offer easy, quiet walking among the trees. The aim is not exercise for its own sake but the simple pleasure of moving through beautiful surroundings with nowhere to be.

Saturday midday: the thermal pools

By late morning or early afternoon, it is time for the experience Hanmer Springs is famous for. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa in the centre of the village offers a large collection of hot pools at a range of temperatures, including natural sulphur pools, alongside freshwater pools and quieter private options. Soaking in warm mineral water is one of the most reliably relaxing things you can do, and it is the heart of any wellness weekend here.

Give yourself a couple of unhurried hours. Move between the different pool temperatures, find a quiet corner, and let the warmth do its work. This is not a place to rush.

Saturday afternoon: your spa treatment

Here is where the weekend reaches its peak. After the thermal pools have loosened everything up, a professional treatment lands even more deeply, because your muscles are already warm and your mind already unwound. Booking a treatment for the Saturday afternoon, after your soak, is our single best piece of advice for a wellness weekend here.

At Vibrant Living, this is where you might choose our signature Full Body Fusion Massage, a 60 minute treatment at NZ$169 that combines warm basalt stones, aromatherapy and targeted work. If you would rather go deeper and longer, the Luxury 90 Minute Full Body Massage at NZ$229 gives more time to release the week. Couples often choose a shared treatment in our double treatment room, and if you want to make an afternoon of it, our two hour Absolute Bliss package at NZ$310 layers several elements into one seamless experience. Because we sit on two acres of gardens, the calm continues the moment your treatment ends, with no drive back to interrupt it.

Saturday evening: a slow dinner

After a soak and a treatment, you will not want a big night out, and you should not force one. Choose somewhere relaxed for dinner and take your time. The village has everything from modern European dining to warming pub fare and casual cafes, so you can match the mood of the evening. If you are marking a special occasion, book ahead. Otherwise, keep it low key and let the day's relaxation carry into the evening.

Sunday morning: nothing, on purpose

The most important part of the itinerary is the part with nothing in it. Sunday morning should be deliberately unstructured. Sleep in. Have a slow breakfast. Sit outside with a coffee and a book. If you are staying with us, use the sauna or hot tub one last time. Our check-out is 10am, but the point is to resist the urge to fill the morning with activity.

If you feel like a final gentle outing, a short stroll or a quiet return to the pools is perfect. The measure of a good wellness weekend is not how much you did, but how rested you feel driving home.

Sunday: an easy drive back

Time your departure so the drive back to Christchurch is relaxed rather than rushed. Break it up if you like, and let the transition back to normal life happen gradually. You want to arrive home carrying the calm with you, not shedding it in traffic.

How to tailor the weekend to you

This itinerary is a starting point, not a rulebook. If you are travelling as a couple, weave in shared treatments and quiet meals. If wellbeing is your whole focus, spend more time on treatments and less on activity, and consider one of our longer packages or a stay and spa escape that bundles accommodation with treatments. If you love the outdoors, add more walking. If you simply want to disappear, do less of everything and more of nothing. The framework holds either way.

A word on doing less

We say this often to guests, because it genuinely matters. The temptation on any weekend away is to maximise it, to tick off every attraction and come home exhausted. A wellness weekend asks the opposite of you. Our owners Adela and Jan built Vibrant Living around the idea of being genuinely held rather than merely entertained, and the guests who leave most restored are almost always the ones who let themselves do less. Give yourself permission to be one of them.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a wellness weekend in Hanmer Springs be?

Two nights is ideal. It gives you a full day in the middle for the pools and a treatment, with unhurried arrivals and departures either side.

Should I book my spa treatment before or after the thermal pools?

After. Soaking in the warm pools first loosens your muscles, so a massage or treatment afterwards feels even better. Book your treatment for the afternoon.

Do I need a car?

It is the easiest way to get here and to move around, though bus services do run from Christchurch. Once in the village, most things are close together.

Can you combine accommodation and treatments in one booking?

Yes. Our stay and spa escapes bundle a room with a couples massage, and at higher tiers add breakfast and extra treatments, which takes the planning off your hands.
