Some of the treatments on a wellness spa menu are easy to picture. A massage is a massage. But reflexology, energy healing and holistic facials often sit in a slightly mysterious category, the ones people are curious about but hesitant to book because they are not quite sure what happens or whether they are the sort of person these treatments are for.
We think that uncertainty deserves a straight answer. This guide explains each of these treatments as we actually offer them at Vibrant Living in Hanmer Springs, who tends to enjoy them, and what is reasonable to expect. We have deliberately kept the claims grounded. These are treatments we love for how they help people relax and feel cared for, and we would rather set honest expectations than oversell.
Reflexology, explained
Reflexology is a form of focused foot work. The idea behind it is that different areas of the feet correspond to different parts of the body, and that working these points can encourage a sense of overall ease. Whatever you make of the map, the experience itself is deeply pleasant, because the feet carry a huge amount of daily strain and rarely get proper attention.
Our Reflexology treatment is a 60 minute session, currently NZ$169, described as foot acupressure. You stay comfortably clothed and reclined while the therapist works methodically across the feet, using pressure that is firm enough to feel purposeful but never sharp. People who spend long days on their feet, who travel a lot, or who simply find foot massage blissful tend to love it.
It is worth being clear about the evidence. Reflexology is widely enjoyed as a relaxing therapy, and many people report feeling calmer and more balanced afterwards. The scientific research into specific health benefits is mixed and limited, so we describe reflexology as a treatment for relaxation and wellbeing rather than a remedy for any particular condition. If that is what you are looking for, an hour of skilled attention to your feet, it delivers beautifully.
If you would like a taste before committing to a full session, we also offer reflexology as a 15 minute add-on to another treatment, which is a lovely way to finish a massage.
Energy healing, explained
Energy healing is the treatment people are most likely to ask cautious questions about, and that is entirely reasonable. It is a gentle, hands-on or hands-near therapy carried out while you rest fully clothed. There is no manipulation of muscle and no pressure. Instead, the practitioner works slowly and quietly, and most people experience it as profoundly calming, a bit like a guided rest for the nervous system.
At Vibrant Living we offer energy healing in a few forms. Our standalone Energy Healing session runs 60 minutes at NZ$199, or 90 minutes at NZ$279. We also offer Chakra Balancing, Intuitive Massage and Sound Healing, which weaves in the resonant tones of sound instruments, at the same durations and prices. For those who want to combine gentle bodywork with an energetic focus, our Massage and Energy Healing treatment brings the two together in a single 60 minute session at NZ$199.
Here again we want to be honest about what this is. Energy healing is not a medical treatment and the research does not support it as a cure for illness. What we can say, from many sessions in our healing room, is that people very often leave feeling settled, unhurried and lighter in mood. If you are drawn to slow, quiet, restorative experiences, or if massage feels like too much stimulation on a given day, energy healing offers a different kind of rest. If it is not your thing, that is completely fine, and we will happily steer you towards a more conventional treatment.
We also offer EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique, a 60 minute session at NZ$149, which uses gentle tapping alongside conversation. Some guests combine it with bodywork in our Massage and EFT treatment, a 90 minute mind and body session at NZ$259.
Holistic facials, explained
A holistic facial is a facial that treats your skin as part of the whole person rather than a surface to be scrubbed. The pace is slower, the products are gentler, and the massage element does as much for how you feel as for how your skin looks. This suits people who find ordinary facials a little clinical, or who want their skincare to double as genuine relaxation.
Everything we use in our facials is chemical free and plant based, drawing on certified New Zealand organic products. That matters to us, and it tends to matter to the people who seek us out. Here is what our facial menu looks like.
The Gemstone Bliss Facial is our most indulgent, a treatment of roughly 75 minutes at NZ$199. It combines hot and cold stone massage across the face with the smoothing glide of a jade roller, so it feels as much like a face and neck massage as a facial.
The Pure Vitality Facial Ritual and Eye Restoration is a 60 minute Ayurvedic inspired treatment at NZ$169, using Beauty Tofu skincare and giving particular care to the delicate eye area. If you would like to add a collagen wand, that is available for an extra NZ$99.
For something quicker, the Express Cleansing and Hydrating Facial is a 35 minute refresh at NZ$129, ideal if you are short on time or adding it to another treatment. We also offer a combined Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage with an express facial, a 60 minute treatment at NZ$179, which is a clever way to look after your muscles and your skin at once.
How to choose between them
These three treatments meet quite different needs, so the choice is usually clearer than it first appears.
Choose reflexology if your feet are tired and you love the idea of an hour of focused, grounding foot work. It is also a gentle introduction for anyone who feels unsure about being touched more broadly.
Choose energy healing if you are craving stillness, if your mind has been racing, or if you simply want to lie down and be looked after without any physical effort at all. It is the quietest treatment we offer.
Choose a holistic facial if you want your relaxation to come with visible glow, or if you have been wanting to switch to gentle, chemical free skincare and would like to feel the difference.
And if you cannot choose, you do not have to. Our longer pampering packages are designed to combine several of these elements into one seamless experience, so you might enjoy a facial and a healing element within the same visit.
Bringing it together in a package
If any of this has caught your interest, the easiest way to explore is through one of our packages. The Body Divine package runs 90 minutes at NZ$250 and lets us blend treatments to suit you. The two hour Absolute Bliss at NZ$310 gives even more room to layer massage, facial and gentle healing elements. For a truly unhurried day, the Ultimate Bliss Revival runs two and a half hours at NZ$360. Each of these is also available for couples if you would like to share the experience.
What to expect on the day
For all of these treatments you will be welcomed into a calm, warm space, offered herbal tea, and given time to settle. We will ask a few questions first so we can tailor the treatment, including anything we should know about your skin, your health or your preferences. You are always in control. If pressure, temperature or anything else does not feel right, telling us is genuinely welcome, not an imposition.
Our approach is shaped by our owners, Adela and Jan, who took over Vibrant Living in 2023 and rebuilt it around heart centred, chemical free care. Adela's background as a physiotherapist means we take health information seriously and never make claims we cannot stand behind. That is the same spirit in which we have written this guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to believe in energy healing for it to be worthwhile?
No. Plenty of guests come simply for the deep rest it provides. You are welcome to enjoy it as a very calm, quiet hour with no particular beliefs attached.
Will a holistic facial suit sensitive skin?
Usually yes, because our products are plant based and chemical free, but please tell us about any sensitivities or allergies beforehand so we can choose the right treatment for you.
Is reflexology painful?
It should not be. The pressure is firm and purposeful, but a good reflexology session feels satisfying rather than sore. Let your therapist know your preference.
Can I combine two of these in one visit?
Yes, and it is a lovely way to experience them. Our pampering packages exist precisely for this, letting us combine treatments into a single, flowing session.
Come and try one
